This year, people may set a personal goal of getting out of debt. In a post last week we told you about how people in Houston are making New Year's resolutions to get out of credit card debt, and stay out of debt. In fact, it ranked second in people's financial resolutions for 2012.
The task of getting your credit cards paid off can seem daunting to many people. Taking a step back and organizing your approach can help you succeed at getting out of debt.
Here are a few tips on how to help get out of credit card debt this year:
•· Get copies of your credit report from all three credit reporting agencies. You are entitled to one free report each year, and it's an important part in understanding why your credit score is the way it is.
•· Use the credit report to fix problems that might be hurting your credit score. Pay down debts that are high. If you have consistently late payments, make sure you pay them on time.
•· If you are ready for a new credit card, take your time to pay off old debts first and make sure your credit score is as high as possible. Once you are ready, shop around and compare cards and benefits. Make sure the benefits of the card outweigh any annual fee the card might impose.
•· Make sure you understand how introductory offers will change your interest rate, rewards and payments once they end. Some might start out with no interest, but at six months skyrocket to a high interest rate.
•· Don't live off of credit. If you can't afford to pay for it at the end of the month, don't buy it. Always pay on time, and know your rights under current credit laws.
If debt get's too out of hand, you may need to consider alternatives such as filing for bankruptcy or other ways to eliminate credit card debt. Speaking with a Houston bankruptcy attorney could help you get out of debt.
